TEROLDEGO ROTALIANO
Served during the famous Council of Trento (1545-1563) the red Teroldego might as well be considered the prince of Trentino’s red wines. To recognize its authentic provenience and local denomination in 1971 the name Rotaliano was added referring to the plain where this wine thrives best. With its origin lost in wine history, Teroldego seems to have been mentioned in ancient documents with the name of Terol together with mulberry trees which seemed to be tended for the support of stakes of the Teroldego vines. A deep red garnet colored wine which evokes wild berries; strong and powerful.

MUELLER THURGAU WHITES
Mueller Thurgau’s story begin more than 100 years ago with the nobleman Hermann Mueller von Thurgau who after finding “his” favorite vine decided that the region of Trentino with its mountains, lakes and forests could be the right terroir home for his vineyard. The Swiss-German vine thus moved to the alpine region of Northern Italy beyond the chain of the Dolomites to where the wine maker and his laborers found first opposition and envies and later, with the intervention of farseeing local wine connoisseurs and later the right place where to produce the golden grapes for the wine which today is considered one of the markers of Trentino best wines. Since early on Mueller Thurgau vineyards showed to be able to thrive on high altitude terraced fields, between valleys and alpine lakes if tended by hand and hard working growers who today produce an excellent white wine which is not only remarkable for its bouquet but goes well as an “aperitivo” and with regional Trentino food specialties. A straw yellow wine with greenish hints evokes apples and vegetables; light and with a fresh taste.

NOSIOLA WHITES
Trentino’s Nosiola wine dates back to the 800’s when wine makers used to make the white wine for local selling purposes, for making wine for celebrating Masses and for providing wine to a famous sweet wine called Vino Santo which celebrated the region’s Catholic tradition around Easter. There are several interesting legends around the origins of the name of the wine; one suggests that the word “Nosiola” is associated to the the world “nocciola” (Hazelnut) to associate the color of the hazelnut with that of the ripe Nosiola grape; other legend reports that the name was entrenched due to the shape of the grape which reminds a bulb of an eye called in regional dialect “osiola;” the oldest tale of the term “Nosiola” dates back to when the Celts where locals in the area of the vineyard calling the wine “theirs” as “nos.” A straw yellow wine. dry. with a fresh taste and an almondy aftertaste.i

MARZEMINO REDS
Trentino’s Marzemino dates back to when the wealthy elite of the Venetian Republic organized its political banquets for negotiations which took Venetian merchants around the globe and was even mentioned as one of the fine wines served when Mozart (1756-1791) visited the region with his father Leopold while touring and playing for the powerful and famous such as local aristocrats as the Lodrons, the Wolkenstein and the Firmians. Legends around this very ancient wine report that the vine was moved from the Black Sea to two locations one in Sicily, called Marzamani, one in Slovenia called Marzemin and later made it up to the Northern Italian region around the XVI century. A ruby red wine with a purplish shine which reminds of wild berries and tastes mildly spicy.

TRENTO DOC SPARKLING BUBBLIES
The story of the famous sparkling pink or white bubbly wines, called sometimes only BOLLICINE and labeled today TRENTO DOC, dates back to before 1960 when a young Trentino winemaker named Giulio Ferrari who had studied at the ISTITUTO AGRARIO SAN MICHELE, today known also as FONDAZIONE MACH, figured out that by adopting a French method champenoise, which he called Metodo Classico, he could produce sparkling wines of great quality. Absolutely no intention to compete with champagne from the Champagne region and absolutely no word of champagne, spumante or prosecco. Simply TRENTO DOC. In 1993 the regional bubbly white or pink wines of fine quality obtained the status of DOC (Denominazione di origine controllata – Name of controlled origin). A further step was the trademark, which entrenched a method, a regional terroir together with a selection of local grapes, usually chardonnay or pinot noir, for high quality wines produced in Trentino. Today Trentino has about 52 TRENTO DOC producers who are evaluated and selected for awards and recommended every year by various Italian and international wine guides and expert associations such as ONAV (Organizzazione Nazionale Assaggiatori di Vino) which lined up recently a few TRENTO DOC sparkling wines for an experienced wine tasting audience.
These were the 2019 TRENTO DOC bottles awarded best quality awards and sampled during a very recent ONAV gathering with more than 40 wine experts and TRENTO DOC fans:
